Living in an older or already-finished Dubai apartment does not mean you need to replace every curtain or open walls and ceilings just to add automation. In many cases, existing curtains can be upgraded. The real question is how much of the current installation is worth keeping. A retrofit might be as simple as adding a rechargeable motor to a compatible curtain rail. At the other end of the scale, the existing fabric may still be perfectly usable while the old manual track is replaced with a purpose-built motorized one. That distinction matters. Smart-curtain retrofitting is not one single product or installation method. The best approach depends on the curtain track, fabric weight, curtain heading, available power, mounting condition and how permanent you want the upgrade to be. Even established motor manufacturers caution that existing window coverings are not automatically compatible with every motorization system. Can You Retrofit Smart Curtains in an Older Dubai Apartment?
In many cases, yes. The age of the apartment itself is not the deciding factor. What matters is what is already fitted around the window.
A practical assessment usually leads to one of three solutions:

Option 1: Add a Motor to the Existing Curtain Track

Current systems demonstrate that this approach can work with different types of U-rails, I-rails and curtain rods, although exact rail dimensions still have to match the manufacturer’s requirements. This type of retrofit is worth considering when:
- the existing curtain still looks good;
- the rail is straight and moves smoothly;

- the installation may need to be reversible later.
It can be particularly attractive in a rental apartment because there may be less permanent alteration. However, renters should still check their tenancy agreement and obtain any landlord or building approval required before drilling or making permanent modifications.
The limitation: A clip-on motor does not repair a bad curtain track. If the curtain already feels heavy to pull, catches at track joints, has damaged runners or sits on loose brackets, adding a motor may simply automate the existing problem. The mechanical condition should be corrected first.
Option 2: Keep the Curtains but Replace the Track
Sometimes the fabric is the part worth saving, not the hardware. In that situation, the existing manual rail can be removed and replaced with a dedicated motorized curtain track. Suitable existing curtains are then rehung on the new system. This approach makes more sense when the current track is old, noisy, damaged or incompatible with retrofit motors. It can also provide a cleaner solution for heavier blackout curtains, wider windows or homeowners who want the motor to feel like part of the room rather than an add-on. A U-shaped rail, I-shaped rail, decorative curtain rod and ceiling-mounted track require different compatibility checks. Even two tracks that look similar may have different internal dimensions. Before requesting an assessment, take:
- a photo of the complete window;
- a close photo of the track from underneath;
- a side view of the track or rod;

What About Wave, Sheer and Blackout Curtains?
Different curtains place different demands on a retrofit system. Wave curtains can work well with motorization when the gliders, spacing and track are compatible. Their appearance depends on smooth, consistent movement, so poor track condition becomes particularly noticeable after automation. Sheer curtains are generally lighter, but the fabric still needs to hang and stack correctly. In living rooms, a separate sheer and blackout layer may require two tracks if you want independent control. Blackout curtains require closer attention to weight. Thick fabric, lining, wide spans and generous fullness can significantly increase the load the motor has to move. Rechargeable, Plug-In or Hardwired?
Power availability often decides what is practical in a finished apartment.
Rechargeable motor: A rechargeable system can avoid permanent electrical work and is useful where there is no convenient socket near the curtain. The trade-off is simple: it needs charging.
Plug-in motor: If a socket is already close to the window, a plug-in system can provide continuous power without a full electrical retrofit. The cable route should still be planned carefully so the installation does not look unfinished.
Hardwired motor: Hardwiring usually makes more sense when you want a permanent, integrated installation or the room is already being renovated. It provides continuous power but may require coordination with electrical work. There is no universally best choice. The right power source depends on how much alteration is acceptable and how the curtain will be used.
Motorized Does Not Automatically Mean Smart
This distinction is important when comparing systems. A motorized curtain simply uses a motor to open and close. A remote-controlled curtain adds a dedicated remote. A smart curtain connects the motor to a broader control system that may support an app, schedules, voice commands, sensors or smart-home scenes. Smart curtains do not necessarily require direct Wi-Fi either. Some systems use Bluetooth or Zigbee and then use a compatible hub for additional integrations. What Happens if the Internet Goes Down?
A well-chosen curtain should not become useless simply because an online service is unavailable, but fallback behavior varies by system. Depending on the hardware, local operation may be available through a remote, Bluetooth, wall control, manual movement or a local hub. Never assume that every smart curtain behaves the same way offline. Ask how the curtain can be operated before installation if the network or smart-home platform is unavailable.
When Should You Avoid Retrofitting?
Do not force a retrofit simply to save the existing installation.
Replacement deserves serious consideration when:
- the curtain already hangs unevenly;
- the track is bent or heavily worn;
- brackets or mounting points are weak;
- fabric condition is poor;
- the available motor cannot comfortably handle the curtain;
- the existing setup has inadequate clearance;
- the desired smart system would require extensive modifications anyway.
A motor should make a good curtain system easier to operate. It should not be expected to compensate for failing hardware.
A Practical Retrofit Process
For an older Dubai apartment, the process should begin with the window rather than the motor. First, inspect the fabric, heading and existing rail. Measure the track and curtain drop, then check how easily the curtain moves by hand. The mounting points and available power should also be inspected. From there, decide whether the better solution is: existing rail + retrofit motor, existing curtains + new motorized rail, or a complete replacement system. Only after that should the motor, power source and smart controls be selected. This avoids buying technology first and discovering later that it does not suit the curtain.
